Mesa County Federal Mineral Lease District Invests Portion of Anvil Points Disbursement

GRAND JUNCTION, CO – The Mesa County Federal Mineral Lease District (MCFMLD) board of directors voted to invest half of the Anvil Points disbursement on May 16, 2018.

The Board hosted an open public workshop in April to solicit public comments on how to best serve the residents of Mesa County with the $1.7 million dollars that was received. Several public entities supported and encouraged the MCFMLD Board to invest the funds for the future of Mesa County with verbal public comments and written letters of support.

Colorado lawmakers passed HB 1152 in 2017, which gave mineral lease districts investment authority. To date, Mesa County Federal Mineral Lease District is the only mineral lease district in the state to utilize the authority given to invest in the future of Mesa County.

“The Mesa County Federal Mineral Lease District’s investment in the Forever Fund demonstrates the difficult political will to invest for the future and build a community endowment for the benefit of Mesa County’s citizens for generations to come. This is a proud day and The Mesa County Commissioners and their efforts to secure these funds for Western Colorado should be applauded,” said Board President David Ludlam.

The total amount that was invested was $937,727. The 50% of the Anvil Points disbursement was $851,936. The District included an additional $85,791 to the amount from unencumbered funds. To date, the total amount invested in the permanent fund is $1.3 million dollars.

The remaining 50% of the Anvil Points money, $851,936, will be used to help fund additional grants when needed.

The next grant cycle for the district will be open on August 1, 2018.
